@magnumphotos bruce i really enjoyed your in motion essays. seems you enjoy conversing with your subjects. do you ever kit/send them photos?

@juanluisgarcia No, that’s why I became a street photog, so I wouldn’t have to talk to people. It’s is a new concept for me, photo & audio

@magnumphotos Hey Bruce, I’ve heard the movie “Blow Up” was a big inspiration for you, do you have any others?

@eyeblink I didn’t love Blow Up, it was only because it was about a Photographer
@eyeblink Films I like: Umberto, Rules of the Game, Zero de Conduit, and many Japanese films

@magnumphotos If you weren’t talking with us what would you be doing right now?

@degner Pacing around my apartment

@magnumphotos How many days in a normal week do you go out shooting?

@degner I used to try to go out every day no I go out less often because of jobs etc

@magnumphotos Hi Bruce, how did your style of work come about, particularly, the idea to use off camera flash outdoors?

@davidsolomons I like film noir, and I guess it was a way of getting back at my father which I discovered after using flash for 20 years

@magnumphotos This chat would be a good deal easier to follow if you assigned it a hashtag such as #gilden

@rholland50 #gilden Good idea

@magnumphotos hey bruce, any emerging photographers whose work caught your eye recently?

@lpvgallery Unfortunately I haven’t looked, I’ve had enough keeping up with my emerging daughter #gilden

@magnumphotos When shooting close up on the street, I’m sure the normal response is to ignore you, but what is the oddest response?

@degner To punch me #gilden

@magnumphotos Why the vest and bag? It seems like overkill. #gilden

@tom_leininger That’s quite simple, vest has pockets, it’s not a fashion statement: bag holds camera/vest holds flash & light meter #gilden

@magnumphotos Bruce, do you shoot digital now? I saw a video of you working but couldn’t tell. #gilden

@richburroughs No, I’m more comfortable with film, I’m not a Luddite though, completely #gilden

@magnumphotos anyone ever offer you a cookie?

@degner Wouldn’t matter I don’t eat sweets #gilden

@magnumphotos Bruce, I saw you had some new year pictures from Wales. Any favourite pubs around here?

@JKaranka Not much pubbing, I was in the Rhondda Valley watching a few fights in the working mans’ clubs #gilden

@magnumphotos hi bruce, how often you have trouble on the street, because your work is so direct to the pepoell? (sorry for the bad english!)

@zumpe Not that often because I have good bedside manners #gilden

@magnumphotos Thanks, I am always curious as to how people carry their gear, you are very consistent. Billingham best bag ever?

@tom_leininger It’s like anything for me, I’m used to it so I don’t change #gilden

@magnumphotos You once mentioned that Brits have a fighting mentality. Is that something that might stop you from doing a project there?

@davidsolomons No, because I have a fighting mentality also #gilden

@magnumphotos Hi im Adrian from Costa Rica, I remember in the workshop that you talked about a movie of yours, what was the name of it?

@AdrianArias Misery Loves Company, The Life and Death of Bruce Gilden #gilden

@magnumphotos thanks for taking the time to talk, though I don’t have any good question.

@degner Thanks for stopping by #gilden

@magnumphotos Any tips about approaching strangers on the street?

@rholland50 If you feel comfortable you have a better chance of them feeling comfortable #gilden

@magnumphotos bruce, what are your favorite neighborhoods in NYC to shoot in?

@bryanf I shoot generally around 5th Ave and Broadway #gilden

@magnumphotos bruce, what are your favorite neighborhoods in NYC to shoot in?

@juanluisgarcia If I wasn’t afraid of doing something different I’d try it, I think there are a lot of advantages to digital #gilden

@magnumphotos is an aggressive personality an necessary requirement for street photography ?

@fabulousmuscles No, being smart is and know who you are #gilden

@magnumphotos any need to use the flash and the camera for self defence? a mate left somebody unconscious with a canon AE1

@JKaranka No, I just use my fist because the camera is too valuable of an object to use on a knucklehead #gilden

@magnumphotos love your work gilden, is the weather good for shooting over there today? it’s raining here

@andyintheworld Where the fuck are you? Here’s it clear but a little chilly 15 degrees #gilden

@magnumphotos Thanks Bruce!! I see you are working more in multimedia these days interacting with audio etc, how has the experience been?

@AdrianArias It makes me see how hard it is to get a good picture, if you interview someone who’s interesting you have it, whereas if you photograph someone who’s interesting you still may not have a good picture #gilden

@magnumphotos #gilden have you ever had any physical confrontations shooting the way you do ?

@daniellekelly Yes, with my wife (haha) #gilden

@magnumphotos Thanks, Bruce. I still shoot film, as well :) Can I ask what film you usually use?

@richburroughs Tri-X #gilden

@magnumphotos seen these photos of yourself? http://flickr.com/photos/mi… & http://flickr.com/photos/ny…

@juanluisgarcia My wife likes that picture a lot #gilden

@magnumphotos i’m in Ireland, guess what? it’s pissing down as usual.

@andyintheworld I like your country #gilden

@magnumphotos you have influenced my street style tremendously bruce

@daniellekelly Thank you but I hope you are being true to yourself #gilden

@magnumphotos are you a fan of photography yourself? do you enjoy fine art stuff like andres serrano or more the like of cartier-bresson?

@juanluisgarcia I enjoy both kinds of photography, you’d be surprised at what I like #gilden

@magnumphotos Can you tell us a little bit about your workflow/processing routine?

@rholland50 I bring my film to my printer and he develops it, but I’m fairly consistent in my exposures #gilden

@magnumphotos Hey Bruce, love your photos. Anything in particular that inspires you?

@jokersjive I’m intuitive, when I see it I know it. Capturing it the way I want to is another thing #gilden

@magnumphotos Wondering… do you shoot your private life the same way? Or is there a secret Gilden of kittens and bright colours?

@JKaranka I’m a very blunt person and what you see is who I am however I have two lovely cats #gilden

@magnumphotos #gilden how much is Street Photography a coincidence in percentage to photographers knowledge/patience/work?

@fba Hard work, intelligence, commitment #gilden

@magnumphotos bruce police powers in the UK are hampering photography, what are your thoughts on this? have you seen similarities in NYC?

@BennehBoy I photograph what interests me within reason, in other words if the odds are against me I don’t #gilden

@magnumphotos Bruce do you think the final product in multimedia is more accurate regarding what you are trying to say in your body of work?

@AdrianArias My photographs are what I feel about society the Magnum in Motions are dealing with problems as an overall issue #gilden

@magnumphotos do you develop your films by yourself? #gilden

@zumpe No, my wife always holds my hand because I’m afraid to be in the dark alone #gilden

@magnumphotos What is your definition of a good photograph?#gilden

@tom_leininger It has to work within the frame, and for me it has to have some emotional content #gilden

@magnumphotos what was your first camera?

@zumpe Miranda #gilden

#DesignTalk : @magnumphotos Also, if I may, how can I get away with up-close flashgun photography o.. http://tr.im/gYb4

@wFreelanceTalk If you’re comfortable and it’s you, you can do it. Or maybe become a ghost #DesignTalk

@magnumphotos Bruce, of your magnum contemporaries whose work is really striking a chord with you at the moment, and why?

@BennehBoy I don’t talk about my fellow magnum photographers (in public) #gilden

@magnumphotos surprise us

@juanluisgarcia I like a lot of Japanese photography from the 60’s and 70’s #gilden
